Don’t get me wrong: shortcode is awesome for opening wide array of possibilities in the post editor. However, whenever I see a shortcode in use, I can’t help but think that there must be a better way to do this. It’s too geeky for many non tech-savvy person.
Add a button for the shortcode that works in the visual editor.
I’ve done it and didn’t satisfied with it. I think the most seamless implementation of shortcode is WordPress’ native [gallery]: It replaces itself with a visual gallery icon after being added to the editor.
That is why some themes have shortcode generators to ease the process. But I must admit it may be technical too. I prefer writing custom layouts using Pods Framework that gives a good user friendly editor interface.
That pretty much explains about what I think about shortcode.
Whoah, Pods looks nice.
I think WordPress admin panel in general is quite geeky, left alone shortcodes.
Thought about creating much simpler panel for end user – Tumblr’s is great – with probably adding a kitchensink button revealing more buttons for advanced post editing features.
IMO, the best option is to make live / front end editing experience ala Barley (getbarley.com).
As far as I know, that’s where WordPress is currently heading. The idea of front end editing is actively discussed on the Make blog. They even already started the development-as-plugin phase for this feature: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-front-end-editor/
Tried the front-end editor sometimes ago.
Gosh, definitely “not-for-developers” UI! ToT
I was lost in chunks of edit buttons and a heavy syncing load.
Still waiting for official release and give it one more try though…
Wait a sec, what do you mean by
"not-for-developers"
UI? Is it too user friendly, or is it too confusing? 😐
